Describe the problem

Colchester and nearby places.

Who should you contact?

Check who owns the affected asset and who can authorise work. Public sewer, highway and landlord reports have separate direct routes. Do not rely on this form for emergency help. Local reporting contacts are below; this enquiry service does not provide emergency dispatch.

Outside drain blocked

Identify the type of outlet from a safe place: a roof downpipe gully, patio channel and foul-water chamber have different functions. Note whether water appears only after rain or during household water use. Keep people away from unknown standing water. Do not assume every drain near the road belongs to Essex Highways or every garden chamber is private.

Outside drain overflowing

Overflow can mean a blocked outlet, restricted downstream run or water arriving faster than the system can discharge. Describe its appearance and trigger without deliberately testing it. Sewage calls for a different report from rainwater ponding. Colchester's urban FRA context does not establish today's cause; ask for investigation of the actual asset and onward route.

Outside drain smells

An outside smell may come from deposits, sewage leakage or the connected system. Record the position and timing and whether water is escaping. Keep clear of contamination and do not reach through a grille. Repeated chemical treatment is not an ownership check or a repair. Report a suspected public-sewer issue directly to Anglian Water.

Standing water around an outside drain

Standing water can result from levels, saturation, outlet restrictions or inadequate onward drainage. The useful questions are where it originates, how long it remains and where it should go. Do not divert it towards a neighbour or highway. A site assessment should establish levels and discharge before specifying channels, excavation or a new soakaway.

Leaves blocking an outside drain

Accessible leaves may be cleared from a safe surface position if conditions allow, without lifting heavy covers or working at height. Leaves below the grille or along a buried run may need suitable equipment. Ask whether cleaning covers the complete route. Removing surface debris will not cure an undersized or obstructed outfall further downstream.

Mud and silt blocking drains

Silt can collect after building work, soil disturbance or runoff. Explain recent changes and where sediment enters. Cleaning should address removal and the source of continuing deposits where practical. An inspection may need to establish whether a trap or downstream pipe is affected. Do not wash removed silt into another drain or the road.

Patio drain blocked

A patio drain needs the surrounding levels, channel condition and outlet considered together. Note whether ponding occurs across the paving or beside one point. Re-laying paving, cleaning a channel and repairing a buried run are distinct jobs. Ask the quotation to specify which is proposed and how the finished water route is checked.

Driveway drain blocked

A driveway's drainage depends on the complete construction and its discharge route. A channel at the entrance does not automatically make runoff acceptable. Record slopes, ponding and any water reaching the pavement. Essex vehicle-crossing permission and planning requirements are separate from drain clearance. Do not assume an existing driveway has a lawful or adequate outfall.

Channel drain blocked

Check what can be seen safely: missing grilles, surface debris and which end appears to overflow. A channel may need cleaning or have a blocked outlet beneath it. Ask whether the job includes that connection and how performance is checked. Do not remove supports, cut new outlets or route runoff onto public land yourself.

Gully drain blocked

A gully collects water into the next part of a system; cleaning its visible bowl may leave a buried restriction. Clarify whether it receives roof water, paved-area runoff or another discharge. Ask which asset is inspected and who owns it. Road gullies on maintained highways use Essex Highways' report route, not a private household-clearance assumption.

Rainwater drain blocked

Trace the rainwater route from roof or paving to its actual outlet using records and professional investigation where needed. A downpipe disappearing into the ground does not identify the destination. Before adding another connection, assess capacity and permission. Rainwater and foul-water systems should not be casually joined because a convenient chamber is nearby.

Surface water drainage problems

The December 2022 Anglian flood plan identifies a defined Colchester urban Surface Water Flood Risk Area. It is useful context for assessing complete runoff routes, not a finding that every home floods. Ask where water comes from and which organisation manages the asset. Current address risk needs its own check; clearing one inlet may not resolve a broader flow problem.

Garden flooding caused by drainage

Garden flooding may involve runoff from elsewhere, saturated ground, watercourses or private drainage. Keep safe observations of rainfall, entry points and duration. Discuss the complete route and ownership before commissioning work. Colchester's council or Essex flood guidance can help identify the correct reporting body; an independent drainage quote cannot settle a disputed watercourse responsibility.

Soakaway problems

A soakaway needs suitable ground, space, levels and an appropriate design. Repeated ponding may call for investigation of the inlet, stored capacity, ground conditions or a different cause. No town-wide soil assumption can establish whether infiltration works in your garden. Ask what site evidence supports the proposed repair or replacement and where overflow would go safely.

How to clean an outside drain

Safe routine cleaning is limited to accessible debris with suitable protection, avoiding contaminated water, heavy covers and confined spaces. Stop if you cannot identify the asset or drainage route. A professional clean should describe the included gully/channel/run and disposal. Report highway or public-sewer assets through their official route rather than arranging unauthorised private work.

Who is responsible for an outside drain?

Ownership depends on the actual pipe or inlet. Essex Highways handles surface-water drainage on roads and pavements it maintains; Anglian Water handles relevant public sewers; private owners or landlords may have other drains. A private-land location does not settle sewer ownership. Ask the responsible body to confirm uncertain assets and keep its response with any quotation.
