Who should you contact?

Check who owns the affected asset and who can authorise work. Public sewer, highway and landlord reports have separate direct routes. Do not rely on this form for emergency help. Local reporting contacts are below; this enquiry service does not provide emergency dispatch.

Signs of a blocked drain

Quick answer

A slow sink, a gurgling shower and wastewater appearing at another fitting give different clues. Note which outlets are affected and whether the change was sudden. Water following a flush into a lower shower can suggest a downstream restriction, but symptoms alone cannot locate it. Do not reproduce an overflow just to demonstrate the fault.

Drain keeps blocking

A drain that works briefly after clearance and then blocks again needs an explanation of the repeat pattern. Save the dates, previous invoices and any camera report. Ask whether deposits, an object, damaged pipework or poor flow were actually found. A fresh inspection should answer a question left unresolved by the last visit, rather than repeat clearance indefinitely.

Kitchen drain blocked

A kitchen sink may be restricted at the waste fitting or further along its branch. Explain whether the dishwasher or washing machine also backs up. Keep cooking fats and food scraps out of the sink. A smell or slow flow does not prove the underground drain is damaged; first establish which part of the system needs attention.

Bathroom drain blocked

Hair, soap deposits and a restricted trap can affect a bath or shower, while a shared branch can cause several bathroom fittings to drain poorly. Accessible surface debris may be removed without disturbing pipework. Stop if the water rises, joints leak or chemical products have already been used; tell the business which products and fittings are involved.

Blocked drain overflowing

Stop adding water to the affected system when it causes an overflow. Keep people and pets away from contaminated water and avoid lifting heavy chamber covers. Explain where wastewater appears and whether neighbours are affected. If the asset may be a public sewer, report it to Anglian Water directly; a private quote should wait until responsibility is clearer.

Blocked drain smells

Drain smells can come from trapped deposits, a dry water seal, ventilation faults or sewage escaping elsewhere. Describe where and when the odour appears, including after rain or appliance use. Do not mask it with repeated chemical treatments. A strong unfamiliar smell with illness or possible gas needs direct emergency advice rather than an email enquiry.

Gurgling drains

Gurgling is air moving through the drainage system and can accompany restricted flow or ventilation problems. Record the fitting making the sound and what happens just before it. Gurgling at one basin is a different starting point from noises throughout a house. Ask for the cause to be investigated; the sound alone does not justify excavating a drain.

Multiple drains blocked at once

Several outlets failing together may share a downstream run. If neighbours have the same symptoms, a shared sewer needs consideration. Check from a safe place and ask Anglian Water about the particular asset. Do not assume a drain is private because its chamber is in a garden, or pay for work on a public sewer without establishing authority.

What causes blocked drains?

An obstruction can involve wipes, grease, scale, silt or a foreign object. Roots or a displaced joint may narrow the route, but need evidence from inspection. Tell the business about recent building work and changes in use. Colchester's historic centre is not evidence that every property has old clay pipes or that age caused this blockage.

How to unblock a drain

For a mild isolated problem, accessible debris and a suitable plunger may be reasonable first steps, following the fitting's instructions. Avoid dismantling unfamiliar pipework, reaching into a chamber or mixing drain chemicals. If an attempt makes water rise elsewhere, stop. The aim is to avoid turning a contained restriction into an overflow or damaging a fitting.

When should you call someone for a blocked drain?

Seek suitable help when wastewater rises, several outlets fail, a blockage repeatedly returns or simple safe measures do not work. Clarify whether you need clearance, investigation or a repair quote. Urgent sewage flooding and suspected public assets have direct reporting routes. This enquiry service does not monitor emergencies or dispatch a drainage team.

How much does it cost to unblock a drain?

Compare the scope, not just a headline call-out figure. Ask whether labour, clearance equipment, VAT, travel, camera work and disposal are included, and what triggers another charge. An inaccessible run may need a different approach from a sink waste. Agree permission and a revised written scope before additional investigation or excavation starts.

Who is responsible for a blocked drain?

Anglian Water explains the distinction between private drains and public or transferred sewers, including shared pipes. Responsibility depends on the actual asset and relevant exceptions. Ask it to confirm an uncertain pipe before commissioning private clearance. Essex Highways is the route for surface-water drainage on maintained roads, rather than the operator of household foul drains.

Blocked drain on rented property

Report the fault to your landlord or managing agent and keep the reference. For a Colchester Borough Homes-managed home, use its repair route; an online repair request is for non-emergency work and its emergency number is 01206 282514. Confirm any authority to commission private work and any responsibility for charges rather than applying another council's tenant policy.
